      Hi Jack

I suppose it depends on what you mean by discovered! I study language and reading specifically, so if it comes to writing, the earliest records have are from Sumeria and Egypt around 3000 years ago.

More recently the main scientist to study written word is probably a man calls Dejerine who work around 1900. He was the first man to study the areas of the brain responsible for reading, which are located around the lower-back area of your brain on the left-hand side only, behind your left ear. He studied patients who had suffered strokes and lost these parts of their brain and found that they could no longer read. I would say he paved the way for a lot of research on reading, and he is someone I have read a lot about.

Like Jen I find it hard to say who discovered my field of research!, In broad terms I look at learning and how hands on experience can help that, there’s a quote from Confucius who was around 551BC-479BC who said “tell me and i’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and i’ll understand” that idea underlies all of my research so I guess Confucius helped! in more recent times people like Piaget and Vygotsky have helped inform our understanding of learning.
