You’d be surprised at the different number of lab coats you can buy. The latest fashion tends to be an all white number with a high neck that covers all of the top of the chest unlike traditional lab coats. This adds extra protection in case any harmful chemicals are spilt.
I’m afraid I don’t know quite as much about lab coats as the other brain scientists might! We tend not to wear them during psychological experiments since they can influence the way our participants act around us – generally people see people in lab coats as authority figures and this changes the way people behave. There were some pretty interesting experiments performed by a scientist called Milgram about authority figures and the effects of uniforms like lab-coats, check out this video!
Like Jen, I don’t wear a lab coat (although not for the same reason, robots tend to work the same way regardless of what I’m wearing…); in fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever worn a lab coat…. But if I did, I’d want a yellow one.
We have to wear horrible paper lab coats. You get loads of static from them and end up giving yourself electric shocks for the rest of the day. I think they’re secretly an experiment by a behavioural scientist to see who’s the stupidest one in the lab: they’re the one who opens the door and touches the metal door handle first.
