Possibly. A lot of this comes down to what is a robot? Do you mean a fully functioning intelligent robot which can think for itself and act as a human, or just the use of tools to make things for us. I mean to an extent a coffee machine is a robot!
Isaac Asimov wrote a lot of science fiction books about robots and he developed four laws (The Zero rule was added last) for robots to keep humans safe:

0-A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm
1-A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2-A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3-A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

I suspect if we start to develop robots with can think for themselves that something like these laws would be developed and ‘hard wired’ into the robots.

Of course we could be faced with all sorts of other problems such as building robots might limit resources such as certain metals for other technology, or we might become over weight and lazy because robots do everything for us.

So yes I suspect we would face a lot of problems which is why people would have long discussions and debates before building some of these robots.

EDIT: I just found this about a bionic man – pretty cool huh! http://wellcometrust.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/we-need-to-talk-about-frankenstein/

I’m not sure a robot will ever have a completely human brain and we have lots of machines that build things for us already, and while these could be considered robots they can’t take over all of the things we do as humans. Human beings are not just machines we have emotions and care for each other in a way that I’m not sure any robot could, although maybe I’ve just watched too many scary science fiction movies!!

Also, it’s not quite robots, but working with machinery at a tiny level could potentially really help humans in the future so perhaps you’re right, combining this work (nanotechnology) with medicine could really help us: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanomedicine
