The brain dies when it doesn’t get a fresh supply of oxygenated blood, if the brain is without oxygen for more than three minutes the cells die and they cannot be revived. From then on this person is in a vegetative state and coma, although it’s important to note that you can be in a coma without* being in a vegetative state, this is called locked-in syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locked-in_syndrome).
When the brain dies the mind dies and what we think of as consciousness disappears, we can no longer function as human beings.
Jen’s provided a really good answer there, the only other thing to add is that once we are dead our body starts to decompose so the same thing will happen to our brains.
After that I don’t really know, some people believe in the afterlife and other people don’t. Some people believe that you can freeze your brain and in the future we’ll have technology to bring people back to life!
