Hi Zeatat – This question has been asked a lot in the chats so you’re not alone in asking!
Personally I don’t have much of a religion, I was christened at birth but I dont attend a church, I’ve always thought that if there is a god that he/she wouldn’t need me to be at a church to show my faith, instead I tend to live by the idea of helping others and do my best. I’m not sure if there is a god, and part of this is science, I just dont understand how he/she would exist especially if we are supposedly modelled on god (according to christians Adam was created in the shape of God) as this makes me think of a giant!
Part of me would like to have more faith as then I could think about things like the afterlife and the possibility of heaven, but mostly I tend to live in the now. I wouldn’t really link this to my job in science though as there are a lot of scientists that believe in god and a lot that dont. Do you think it matters if a scientist believes in god?

      Hi zea!

I personally don’t have a faith, although I was raised as a Protestant Christian I have since studied religion for myself and decided that it’s not for me. I don’t think there’s any reason why someone can’t be both a scientist and have a religious belief, there are plenty of Christian scientists in America for example who reconcile the two just fine. I don’t think it means relying on science necessarily, but being happy with what science can offer us. A famous scientist once asked why science wasn’t enough for those who believed in God, nature and the world and the brain and the sky and everything around us is beautiful and complex and amazing – why do they need a God or religion to explain why any of it exists? Isn’t it enough that it’s just there and beautiful? I kind of feel like that 🙂
