do you mean personally? Or on other people? Personally the worse thing I did was break my leg, and I went to hospital for that!
My research doesn’t work with disorders so I don’t have to deal with injuries, but I was always interested in the case of Phineas Gage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phineas_Gage
I’ve been really lucky and never really had any very bad injuries. I tore my ankle ligament last year when running a half marathon, that was pretty painful. The treatment wasn’t very exciting, I just had to rest a lot until I could walk on it again.
I’m a bit of a clumsy person so I tend to be overly careful even when I’m taking part in sports like squash or skiing! Thankfully this means I haven’t ever had any serious injuries, I did once bang my head pretty hard when I slipped unexpectedly on a floor. I hoped I’d be able to test my brain function myself, and my friend who was with me who is also a brain scientist tried to work out if I’d broken part of my visual area at the back! But the doctors just laughed and said I hadn’t hit my head hard enough thankfully!
Umm, well through various sports I’ve torn my ankle ligaments twice, broken my nose, had a fractured foot, torn my hamstring, damaged my back to the point of not being able to walk…but the worst of them was that I smashed my thumb into about four pieces while I was playing volleyball. So it’s now held together by a metal plate. The lesson? Sport can be pretty bad for you.
As a cyclist I’ve lost a fair bit of skin to road rash, and a broken/dislocated wrist from snowboarding, and I once punctured my cheek on a table. Other than that, nothing much really…
