sad to be evicted, but good luck to James and Jen!

Favourite Thing: My favourite thing in science is to work with real people and find solutions. I also like to hear/read about unusual cases in psychology. ‘The man who mistook his wife for a hat’ by Oliver Sacks is one of my favourite books. Other than that I love explosions, I always wanted to be a chemistry teacher and maybe one day i’ll get there!

My CV

Education:

Rednock, Glos (1998-2004), Lancaster Uni (2005-2008), Bath University (2008-now)

Qualifications:

10.5 GCSE’s (RE was a short course), 5 Alevels and 1 AS Level, One degree in Psychology, and nearly nearly one PhD

Work History:

While at school and Uni I worked in my local Dr’s, and for an energy company, and since obtaining my degree I have worked at Bristol University and now Bath University

Current Job:

I’m a researcher on a project which looks at learning and knowledge capture in big projects to do with low carbon energy.

Employer:

University of Bath

Me and my work

I try to understand learning and expertise, in particular how technology can support this.

My Typical Day

I read about other people’s work, I apply their theories to my own ideas and sometimes I’ll run an experiment, I’ll also drink a lot of tea.

My typical day begins at home where I get up, have breakfast and let my chickens out. Somedays I wished that I studied chickens instead of humans, then I could sit in my garden all day and watch them!
After that I drive to work, normally i’m at the uni so that takes me an hour so by the time i’m there i’m ready for another cup of tea! From there my day varies, i’m a researcher on three projects looking at low carbon ideas  so somedays I will be writing up reports, or interviewing people about the projects. On other days I will be working on my own research and conducting experiments into expertise.
Some weeks I lecture about my PhD topic which has looked at technology and education.
When i’ve finished my work I’ll drive home, have some food and at the moment work on my PhD – i’m hoping it will be finished soon and then i’ll be able to have hobbies again!

What I'd do with the money

If I won the money i’d like to buy some equipment to take into schools and inspire students about research into Human Computer Interaction

If I won the money, I’d spend some time discussing with my colleagues in my lab the best kind of equipment/resources to buy to inspire students and teachers. Most likely it would centre around tools for datalogging and perhaps some bits of Arduino equipment so we can show students how to make their own sensors. This is all a bit vague in my mind so i’m happy to hear suggestions from you about what you would like me to spend the money on.

My Interview

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

happy, talkative, control freak

Who is your favourite singer or band?

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

What is the most fun thing you've done?

I was going to say learning to surf, but i’ve seen someone else has put that! so maybe I should change mine to learning to try new things, in the past few years i’ve visited China, learnt to surf and i’ve ridden down some scary mountain trails on my bike!

If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!

to finish my PhD!, to live well, to have a family

What did you want to be after you left school?

I wanted to be a mother and a teacher. Being a mother is a little far off so i’m starting by learning things myself so one day I can teach and inspire others.

Were you ever in trouble in at school?

nope, I was a bit nerdy and scared of getting in trouble!

What's the best thing you've done as a scientist?

Worked directly with teachers to find solutions for their problems

Tell us a joke.

It’s not a joke, but I did once fall over in a river while I was working with some students on the environmental science alevels

Other stuff

Work photos:

myimage1 Here is a picture of me taking part in an engagement activity with primary schools, we wanted to excite students about technology so we took along a kinect and showed the students how they could become superheroes.

myimage2 This a picture of my office, it’s quite plain, and to be honest I spend a lot of my time in other places.

myimage3 Here is a picture out of my window, i’m on the 6th floor so mostly I can see the top of other buildings! It’s a bit grey today but in the summer it’s nice and bright.

myimage4 this is Tuesday, one of my baby chickens, currently it’s too cold so she lives in the house, and can be a bit of a pain when I try to work from home…
